I remember an art installation – probably a decade ago in New York – made of legal documents, court sketches, & transcripts. The artist had filed a name-change request… without any change. They called it a refresh of their name, "like refreshing a website".

But the judge wasn't sure if they had the legal authority to *not change* someone's name. Clearly they could change it, or leave it as-is, but does the law even allow a judge to "refresh" a name? I don't remember the conclusion. I think they did it?
