  1. The central goal of CSS was to give us "authors" INPUT without giving us any CONTROL. The original proposal refers to CSS as "HINTS & SUGGESTIONS" which the user & browser are allowed to override or ignore. HTML is similar. That's a political stance, & remains controversial.

When I say that "tech is political" I mean it all the way down to language design & the platforms we choose to build on. Then also what we build, who we build with/for, & how we do or don't respect the unique goals, preferences, needs, & privacy, of everyone who sees our work.

Diversity, inclusion, equity, performance, accessibility, & decentralized user-control are fundamental problems at every layer, not a nice add-on when there's budget for it. There is no "normal" user. Giving up power & control beats "empathy" at every step of the process.

"allowed to override" is an understatement here. ENCOURAGED or ASSUMED would be more accurate. The cascade of styles is the entire basis for the language.
